Atholl Estates Hydro Scheme

Atholl Estates is currently installing two Hydro Schemes on the Dowally and Broom Burns. The Dowally scheme will have a generating capacity of 436kw and the Broom Burn will power a 464kw turbine. Thats enough for each to power around 250 houses!

Both schemes extract a proportion of water flow from the upper reaches of the burns using pipes of 560mm diameter which are laid underground. Once the water goes through the turbines, all the energy is removed and it flows gently back into the burns just downstream from the powerhouses.

The schemes have been designed to reduce any environmental impacts so the green energy they produce over the next 80 or so years makes a great contribution to the nation's demand for sustainable energy.
