LONG DISTANCE ROUTES

Blair Atholl is the start of two historic Long Distance Routes taking you through remote countryside to the Cairngorms.

1. Glen Tilt
Walking through Glen Tilt to Glen Geldie links Blair Atholl and Braemar. The walk is 22 miles road end to road end, 28 miles village to village. The route is easy to follow with gentle gradients and little climbing, the only obstacle is crossing the Geldie Burn which is a paddle after dry weather, but uncrossable when in spate. Glen Tilt is often linked with the Lairig Ghru to make a through route from Blair Atholl to Aviemore. Glen Tilt can also be done by mountain bike, although there are 3 miles in the middle of the route on a narrow, rocky path where all but the most skilled cyclists will need to wheel.

2. Minigaig
The Minigaig is an old drovers’ road linking Blair Atholl/Calvine with Kingussie. It climbs up to 3000 feet over featureless moorland and is hard to follow in places. The walk starts either from Old Blair near Blair Atholl, following the track up the Banvie Burn and then the Allt an tSeapail, or from Calvine following the right of way to Glen Bruar. Both routes meet at Bruar Lodge. Total walk is approximately 33 miles. Do not attempt this walk unless you have competent navigation skills or you may end up lost in very remote countryside.
